Self-serve soda machines are quietly going the way of Supersize options at McDonald’s.
The fast-food giant will reportedly phase out do-it-yourself soda fountains at all locations nationwide by 2032, much like it did away with Supersize fries and drinks in 2004 after the release of the controversial documentary Super Size Me.
“The shift, years in the making,” FoxBusiness reported Sunday, “is part of a broader effort by McDonald’s to modernize its restaurants, reduce labor and maintenance demands, and adapt to changing consumer habits that increasingly favor takeout, delivery, and drive-thru service over dining in.”
For McDonald’s, the purge is a natural response to the decline of traditional eat-in customers as drive-thru and app orders for delivery or pickup become increasingly popular. An estimated 40 percent of McDonald’s domestic sales now stem from digital orders, reducing demand for dining room soda machines, which require constant maintenance and sanitation. Filling drink orders behind the counter is more efficient, less wasteful, and all but immune to theft.
For customers, the downside is obvious: No more free refills and fun experiments mixing a combination of sodas in one cup to create a personalized taste sensation.
“McDonald’s decision to end self-serve soda stations may seem minor, but it reflects a larger transformation in fast food,” says So Yummy, the website best known for its “fun food” content. “Convenience is no longer about choice, it’s about speed, consistency, and control. As digital ordering reshapes restaurants, customers may lose small perks they once took for granted.”
As it eliminates self-serve soda dispensers, McDonald’s is also expanding its beverage menu this month. The New York Times reported in April that the company has finally decided to introduce a line of bright-colored, fruit-flavored refreshers, a rapidly expanding niche popularized in recent years by Starbucks and Dunkin’, as well so-called “dirty sodas,” soft drinks that combine assorted syrups and flavored creams.
McDonald’s is rolling out the new drinks nationwide after initiating a pilot program for refreshers and dirty sodas at 500 locations in September.
“We may be late to the party,” franchisee Scott Rodrick said, “but we are the most interesting guest.”
