Recall of organic chips containing a carcinogenic substance

Did you fall for a packet of organic chips while shopping at Biocoop? Check your cupboard immediately: organic potato chips sold in stores in this network are the subject of a product recall published on May 6 on the official government website rappel.conso.gouv.fr.

According to the official recall sheetthe reason for the recall is acrylamide level greater than 1,500 µg/kgwhich exceeds regulatory thresholds. The risk is classified in the “other chemical contaminants” category.

This compound has been recognized for several years as a proven carcinogen in animals. In humans, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies it as a “possible” carcinogen. In 2015, the European Food Safety Authority assessed that acrylamide in food potentially increases the risk of developing cancer for consumers of all ages. It is also to control this risk that the European Union set up, in April 2018, a regulations on maximum levels authorized in industrial productsthreshold that these organic chips exceed.
