Updating your cellphone, computer, and other electronic devices is about to become more important than ever.
The recent revelation that Anthropic’s newest artificial intelligence agent, Claude Mythos, can possibly do more harm than good caused the company to postpone its release to the public.
A data leak first reported by Fortune revealed that Mythos had uncovered thousands of “high-severity vulnerabilities” in popular websites and apps, including some in “every major operating system and web browser.”
For hackers, a friend like Mythos would be a partner in crime.
Anthropic has responded to the potential threat by launching Project Glasswing, “an urgent attempt” to secure “the world’s most critical software.” The company has shared a preview of its most powerful AI tool to date with 11 other high-tech companies—including Apple, Google, and Nvidia—so they can find and fix weaknesses in their own systems. An additional 40 organizations that “build or maintain critical software structure” have also been granted access, Anthropic said.
Those remedies should start appearing soon in software updates. “We’re going to see a traffic jam of patch releases and system downtimes as companies try to apply these patches,” said Katie Moussouris, chief executive of the cybersecurity firm Luta Security in Kirkland, Washington.
