Stop the presses: MIT Sloan Management Review, the preeminent business journal heralded for its research-based insights on management strategies in an ever-evolving high-tech world, is shutting down its online publication and quarterly magazine.
The exact date of the Review’s final deadline and the number of employees affected have yet to be announced.
News of SMR’s demise was contained in a letter to colleagues of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management from dean Richard M. Locke. A copy of the letter was obtained by Inc.
The “difficult decision,” he said, stems from the school’s pending move to merge its communications office with formerly independent programs “to build a more unified, strategic, and streamlined approach to messaging and communications practices.”
“We are at a pivotal moment,” Locke claimed, “one in which what we communicate, and how we communicate, has a direct impact on our visibility, impact, and engagement with the world.”
Noting “broader shifts in how audiences engage with management ideas and publications,” Locke said MIT Sloan’s future findings will be showcased in “a variety of platforms, including digital newsletters, short-form video, social-first content, and podcasts.”
He added, “We will strengthen the school’s voice, elevate the quality and reach of our content, and better serve all of our constituents—faculty, staff, and students, as well as alumni and global business leaders.”
