Michael Dell Just Surpassed $1 Billion in Donations to a Single Institution

Some billionaires are looking to give back to AI. The CEO of Dell Technologies donated $750 million on Tuesday to the University of Texas at Austin.

The gift is helping bring a new project funded by Michael Dell, the UT Dell Medical Center, to advance human health. The new project is set to open in 2030, part of the UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research, and is looking to break ground this upcoming fall. According to the school, the new center will be an AI-native hospital.

“What makes this moment so meaningful is the opportunity to build something that brings every part of the journey together — from how students learn, to how discoveries are made, to how care reaches families. By bringing together medicine, science and computing in one campus designed for the AI era, UT can create more opportunity, deliver better outcomes, and build a stronger future for communities across Texas and beyond,” said Michael and Susan Dell.

The new commitments by the couple will also provide support for undergraduate student scholarships, student housing, and UT’s Texas Advanced Computing Center, one of the nation’s leading supercomputing research centers.

Techno Tradition

Dell Technologies was founded back in 1984 when Dell was a UT-Austin pre-med student in his freshman dorm room. He began to sell personal computers, which then turned into a multibillion-dollar company. As of 2026, Michael Dell is worth $170 billion, according to Forbes.

Dell Technologies made a big push into AI back in 2024, looking to join the rest of the tech sector with its Dell AI Factory. With their newest gift to UT Austin, the couple becomes the first donors to give more than $1 billion, according to AP. Dell first donated back in 2013 with $50 million to develop the Dell Medical School.

According to the UT Austin, the UT Dell Medical Center will “become a leading destination where care, discovery and innovation converge.” The school is looking to design a fully integrated, patient-centered system of care where technology, data and AI are embedded to support clinicians and connect a patient’s journey.
