Mental health: why Nicolas Demorand no longer hosts the France Inter morning show

He hasn’t been on the air for several months. In October 2025, Nicolas Demorand left the morning show on France Inter. For more than six months, the journalist is on sick leave because of his mental health. “He needs to rest,” said Adèle Van Reeth, former director of France Inter.

In March 2025, he revealed in his book Interior Night that he suffered from type 2 bipolarity. “I don’t want to hide it anymore and I don’t want to hide anymore. Like hundreds of thousands of French people, I am bipolar, bipolar type 2. (…) I alternate between phases of euphoria and periods of depressionbut I am being treated,” confided the journalist.

This form of bipolarity is characterized by “the association of at least one characterized depressive episode and an episode d’hypomanie. Here again, it is difficult for some patients in depressive phase to consider this diagnosis, because the link with a hypomanic episode known sometimes 10 years earlier is not obvious », explains Incea, a major player in the management of Medical and Rehabilitation Care (ex SSR), Mental Health and Home Care

In France, it is estimated that up to 2.5% of the population suffers from bipolar disorder. “I am here every morning, striving towards a goal, that of working with the whole team to inform you, entertain you and make you feel emotions. If I kept silent for so long, it’s because mental illness is scary, because it remains shameful. And I was ashamed,” confided Nicolas Demorand.

Recently, her friend Léa Salamé gave her news in the columns of Le Parisien: “ He’s better. He is very touched by the messages from Inter listeners worried about him. He must now finish repairing himself. It’s on the right track, and knowing him, I think he wants to get back on the microphone.”
