The side hustle conversation is dominated by Gen Z. They’re called America’s first true “side hustle generation,” and the numbers back it up. Roughly a third of Gen Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, currently have a secondary income source. Their side hustles are social media-driven and identity defining.
As someone who is on the fringe of Gen X, as I look around at my peers and know we are sitting on something largely untapped. Born between 1965 and 1980, Gen X professionals like myself have spent decades building deep professional expertise, wide networks, and hard-won institutional knowledge that younger generations simply don’t have yet. Only 23 to 33% of Gen X have a side hustlemaking them the most under-leveraged generation in the gig economy.
Why Gen X Is uniquely positioned
Like my fellow Gen X peers, I did not grow up with the internet. I remember the dial-up modems and the message from AOL saying, “You’ve got mail.” When social media became prevalent in our adulthood, we learned it. Much like the scene in the movie Office SpaceI had dreams of taking a baseball bat to the office fax machine. Gen X is adaptable and has figured out how to use technology.
This pattern of forced adaptation is exactly what makes Gen X so well-suited for the side hustle economy in 2026. The global gig economy is now valued at $556.7 billion and projected to hit $2.15 trillion by 2033. The window to stake a claim is wide open.
When Gen X does a side hustle, they do it well. Research shows Gen X side hustlers earn an average of $751 per month more than Baby Boomers, and with more consistency than Gen Z, whose earnings tend to be more volatile and platform-dependent.
The motivation is also different. While Gen Z pursues side hustles for identity and creative expression, 63% of GenX side hustlers cite straightforward extra income as their primary driver.
The AI question
Here’s where it gets interesting. Only 44% of Gen X freelancers have received AI skills training, compared to 71% of Gen Z. On the surface, that looks like a disadvantage.
