Starbucks Is Using ChatGPT to Change How You Buy Coffee

Your next Starbucks run could be inspired by what you’re wearing.

Starbucks is introducing a new AI-powered feature within ChatGPT that suggests drinks based on your mood, cravings, or even a photo. The move makes it one of the first major restaurant chains to embed AI into the discovery and ordering experience, offering a glimpse into the future of the digital menu.

“This is the kind of technology that sparks creativity and helps customers discover something new,” the company’s senior vice president of digital and loyalty Paul Ridel said in a statement.

This is the latest step in the company’s ongoing push toward customization, building on features like a “secret menu” and trending drinks that have been fueled by social media.

Currently, the beta version is available and to access it customers must enable the Starbucks app through ChatGPT’s app directory and submit a prompt using “@Starbucks” alongside a request like “a cozy drink to wind down with” or “something refreshing for a hot afternoon.”

If they prefer not to describe what they want in words, customers can also upload a photo of their outfit or the weather outside to receive drink suggestions tailored to their mood.

However, while they can customize their drinks and even select what location to order from, customers will need to complete their order specifically on the Starbucks app or website—a significant factor for a company with a strong reliance on its loyalty program.
