What are the health benefits of wholemeal pancakes?

It’s hard to resist a good pancake. However, when we pay attention to our diet, a question often arises: should you swap white flour for wholemeal flour? ? This alternative has advantages, but it also comes with some preconceived ideas. We take stock with Vanessa Bedjaï-Haddad, dietitian nutritionist.

What is the difference between classic pancakes and wholemeal pancakes?

The main difference is at the level of flour.

  • The white flour is refined. During its manufacture, a large part of the grain husk is removed. “It becomes thinner, but also poorer in fiber, vitamins and minerals,” indicates the dietician.
  • Conversely, the wholemeal flour preserves the grain husk in its entirety. It is therefore naturally richer in nutrients, particularly in dietary fiber.

Another important point: wholemeal pancakes often have a stronger taste and a slightly more rustic texture. This may be surprising at first, but many get used to it quickly.

On the other hand, When it comes to calories, the difference is minimal. Contrary to what we often hear, wholemeal pancakes are not necessarily fewer calories than classic pancakes.

Are wholemeal pancakes better for your health?

Yes. “Their main advantage comes from their richness in fiber,” emphasizes the dietitian.

They satisfy more

The digestion is slower thanks to the fibers. We feel satisfied more quickly, and above all longer. This can make a real difference on a daily basis:

  • We avoid automatically refilling.
  • We limit the hunger pangs in the afternoon.

They limit sugar peaks

Dietary fiber slows the absorption of carbohydrates in the blood. Blood sugar increases more gradually. Result :

  • Fewer bouts of fatigue after the meal.
  • Fewer sweet cravings a few hours later.

Fibers promote transit

Fiber is essential for the proper functioning of the digestive system. They facilitate transit and can help in case of constipationprovided you drink enough water.

Are wholemeal pancakes always a good choice?

Not necessarily. As is often the case in nutrition, it all depends on the context…And especially what you put on your plate.

Toppings change everything

A whole pancake is not necessarily healthy. It’s often the topping that makes the difference!

For example, with spread, sugar and caramel… It can quickly become richer and less balanced than a classic pancake.

Beware of sensitive intestines!

Fiber is beneficial… But they are not suitable for everyone.

In some people, they can cause:

If you have a sensitive intestine, it’s better to take it gradually…

The industrial “complete” is not always ideal

Not all “complete” products are equal.

Some commercial products are:

  • Very processed,
  • Poor in valuable nutrients,
  • Sometimes high in sugars or additives.

“The best reflex remains homemade,” says Vanessa Bedjaï-Haddad.

Who really benefits from choosing wholemeal pancakes?

Wholemeal pancakes can be particularly interesting if you:

  • tend to snack between meals.
  • Seek to better manage your blood sugar.
  • Want to increase your fiber intake.

On the other hand, they are not essential for everyone.

How to prepare healthier wholemeal pancakes?

Good news: it only takes a few adjustments to make your pancakes more nutritionally interesting… without losing the pleasure.

Good reflexes to adopt

For a more balanced base, you can:

  • Use a wholemeal or semi-wholemeal flourricher in fiber.
  • Limit sugar in the dough.
  • Prefer one semi-skimmed milk or a plant-based drink enriched with calcium.

To go further, also think about:

  • Add seeds (chia seeds, flax seeds, etc.) for a supply of fiber and good nutrients.
  • Cook your pancakes with little fat.
  • Adapt the portions to your hunger.

In summary, wholemeal pancakes are a good option for improving the nutritional quality of your meals. They satisfy you better and have a gentler impact on blood sugar levels. But they don’t work miracles. The main thing remains the overall balance of your plate…And the pleasure of eating. So yes, you can adopt wholemeal pancakes. Without pressure, and above all without guilt!
