Doppler ultrasound (or Doppler ultrasound): definition, procedure, price

This medical imaging technique allowing the speed of blood circulation in certain vessels of the body to be observed is indicated in several cases and does not present a risk to health.

Definition: what is a Doppler ultrasound?

Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive medical examination which combines classic ultrasound and the Doppler effect in order to study both the anatomy of the vessels and the circulation du sang.

As explained on the Orléans University Hospital website (source 1), it is based on the use of ultrasound : high frequency sound waves, imperceptible to the human ear. These waves, emitted by a probe, pass through the tissues and are reflected to produce images in real time. The addition of doppler allow to analyze the speed and direction of blood circulation in the vessels, which provides essential information on their proper functioning.

What is the difference between ultrasound, Doppler and Doppler ultrasound?

These three terms are often confused, but they correspond to complementary techniques:

  • Ultrasound allows you to visualize organs and structures (such as arteries or veins) using ultrasound. It gives a “fixed” image of the anatomy;
  • Le Doppler relies on a physical principle (Doppler effect) to analyze movements, particularly that of blood circulating in the vessels;
  • Doppler ultrasound combines the two : it allows both to see the vessels and to study the blood flow circulating there. It is this double analysis which makes the examination particularly useful in medical practice.

Indications: when should a Doppler ultrasound be done?

Doppler ultrasound is prescribed in many situations, particularly for explore the arteries and the veins :

  • In the neck (carotid arteries);
  • From the abdominal aorta;
  • Lower limbs (legs);
  • Upper limbs (arms).

It is also used for guide certain medical procedures (such as vein treatments) or monitor cardiovascular diseases.

Arterial or venous Doppler ultrasound

There are two main categories of examination:

  • Venous Doppler ultrasound analyzes the circulation of blood in the veins (return to the heart). It is particularly useful for diagnosing venous insufficiency, varicose veins or thrombosis (phlebitis);
  • Arterial Doppler ultrasound studies blood flow in the arteries (from the heart to the organs). It can detect narrowing (stenosis), obstruction or dilation (aneurysm), often linked to atherosclerosis.

Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs (legs)

Very common, this examination allows to explore the veins and arteries of the legs. It is particularly prescribed for:

It can be performed lying down, then completed in a standing position to better analyze the functioning of the veins.

Doppler ultrasound of the upper limbs

This examination concerns vessels of the arm, forearm and hand. In particular, it allows:

Doppler ultrasound of the neck (carotids)

The examination of neck arteries is essential for preventing stroke (AVC). It allows you to identify:

  • Of the atherosclerotic plaques ;
  • And narrowing of the carotid arteries ;
  • Of the abnormalities of blood flow to the brain.

It is often recommended in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol).

Doppler ultrasound of the abdominal aorta

This exam is used to explore the aorta and abdominal arteries. In particular, it allows:

  • Screen a aneurysm (dilation of the aorta);
  • Detect a narrowing of the digestive or renal arteries ;
  • To watch the evolution of a vascular pathology.

Cardiac Doppler ultrasound (echocardiography)

Doppler ultrasound can also be used to examine the heart. It allows you to visualize:

  • THE heart chambers ;
  • THE valves ;
  • THE heart movements ;
  • THE intracardiac blood flow.

This examination is essential for diagnose or monitor heart disease (heart failure, valvular heart disease, malformations, etc.).

Doppler ultrasound: how is the examination carried out?

The exam generally takes place in a lying position. The doctor applies a probe on the skin, after having deposited a gel which facilitates the transmission of ultrasound. It then moves the probe along the vessels to be explored. During the exam it is possible to hear sounds features a pulsating noise for the arteries and a more continuous noise for the veins.

These sounds correspond to blood flow analyzed in real time.

How to prepare for the Doppler ultrasound?

In the majority of cases, no preparation is necessary. Alone exception : abdominal Doppler ultrasound. You may be asked to follow a low-residue diet in the preceding days to limit intestinal gas, which can interfere with visualization.

Where to do a Doppler ultrasound?

The examination is carried out in a specialized office (angiologuephlebologist), at the hospital or in a medical imaging center.

Is the Doppler ultrasound painful?

No, the Doppler ultrasound is painless. However, discomfort may be felt if the area examined is sensitive (for example in the case of phlebitis), or if the practitioner must exert greater pressure with the probe.

How long does a Doppler ultrasound take?

The exam lasts on average 30 minutesbut may be longer depending on the area studied or the pathology sought.

Are there any contraindications to Doppler ultrasound?

There does not exist no contraindication to Doppler ultrasound. As the University Hospitals point out, this examination is safe because it does not use X-rays. It can therefore be carried out on all patients, including pregnant women.

When do we get the results of a Doppler ultrasound?

The results are generally given immediately orally by the doctor. A written report, often accompanied by images, is then given to the patient or sent to the prescribing doctor.

How much does a Doppler ultrasound cost?

The cost varies depending on the type of exam and location, generally between €70 and €150. When prescribed by a doctor, it is reimbursed at 70% by Health Insurance, the rest can be covered by mutual insurance.
