Apple Names John Ternus as Next CEO, Succeeding Tim Cook

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple announced that Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become Apple’s next chief executive officer effective on September 1, 2026.

The transition, which was approved unanimously by the Board of Directors, follows a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.

Two big things stood out to me about the announcement, even before we get into who Ternus is exactly and what this might mean for Apple.

First, the last seven words of that opening paragraph: “a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.”

Because when your company’s stock has jumped 138% in the last five years and almost 2,200% in the 15 years since the last CEO transition (from Steve Jobs to Tim Cook), stability is the key thing you’d want to reassure people about.

The second thing that struck me? It’s the photo accompanying the statement, in which Cook and John Ternus are dressed almost identically — dark collared shirts hanging outside their blue jeans — and literally walking in stride together.

The announcement continues:

Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition. As executive chairman, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world.

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became a vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013. He joined the executive team in 2021 as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

Throughout his tenure at Apple, Ternus has overseen hardware engineering work on a variety of groundbreaking products across every category.

He was instrumental in the introduction of multiple new product lines, including iPad and AirPods, as well as many generations of products across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.

So, we have a 25-year Apple veteran and a nearly half-year transition.
